Spark Ventures’ model of business driven philanthropy leverages charitable contributions to fund food and agricultural-focused, private sector initiatives in emerging regions of the world. The returns from these investments are funneled into endowments and managed by local, non-governmental organization (NGO) partners that impact education, health care, and nutrition. In Zambia, Spark Ventures supports a school, a health clinic, an orphanage, and a range of community programs in Ndola through investments in a rapidly expanding poultry farm, managed by local staff, in Lusaka. This farm now produces over 100,000 chickens a year. The school provides education to roughly 350 children. Spark’s investments and ongoing consultation enable teaching salaries, school infrastructure, health care interventions, computer training, administrative support, capital commitments for buildings, and other programs to continue.
